MACHINA COLLECTION

The body and cap of the Machina pen are made artisanally and are decorated with Da Vinci’s revolutionary technical drawings of machines. These illustrations were taken from one of the Tuscan artist’s biggest body of work, the Atlantic Codex.

The Machina fountain pen is an original masterpiece. Da Vinci’s most famous inventions are brought to life with the ancient scrimshaw technique: micro-incisions are made in the resin body of the pen and then covered in red pigment.

THE MIND OF A GENIUS

Leonardo da Vinci, has become the epitome of the Renaissance genius, a master of art and science. Born near Florence, his visionary inventions have become just as famous throughout the world as his artistic creations. The Machina collection is inspired by Da Vinci’s brilliance and commemorates the 500th anniversary of his death.

THE SANGUINE TECHNIQUE

The distinct look of the Machina pen is due to the engravings that recall the Sanguine technique, an artistic style very much in vogue during the Renaissance and often used by Da Vinci. The mahogany box in which the pen nestles is in the shape of an icosahedron, a solid with 20 triangular faces which symbolises water and its movement.

MATERIALS

The artisanally made resin barrel and cap are decorated with some of Da Vinci’s revolutionary technical drawings of machines. These illustrations were taken from the Atlantic Codex, one of the greatest collection of the Tuscan genius’s drawings and writings.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

The Machina fountain pen comes in two versions. One with metal fittings in silver Ag925, the other in pink gold. These refined pieces are made with lost wax casting. The body of the pen is decorated with some of Da Vinci’s beautiful drawings using the scrimshaw technique.

THE SCRIMSHAW TECHNIQUE

In order to guarantee a beautiful final result, precision and extreme attention to detail are fundamental. The artisan works "in the dark" with the scrimshaw incision since very little can be perceived until the ink is deposited inside the lines.

Visconti

Visconti’s history began in Florence, Italy. A cradle of art and culture, Florence also known for being home to one of the Country’s largest industrial districts for luxury and fashion.

The company is the brainchild of Luigi Poli and Dante del Vecchio, two friends who met in Florence and decided to turn a common passion into business by founding Visconti on October 20, 1988.

On that date, luxury writing instruments began to make their way in a city that was strongly linked to jewellery, leather goods and any other form of art. Over time, Visconti products became iconic pieces that helped to spread Italian values worldwide: design and creativity, craftsmanship and innovation, quality and luxury.
