the King of Pens (KOP) is introduced as the top of the range, developed as the symbol of Sailor’s technology, quality and writing perfection gained with the experience of over 100 years. Special attention has been given to the oversized 21K solid gold nib (the life and soul of the fountain pen), which provides top writing quality.
Urushi lacquer is a very special natural material, which is made from the sap of trees, which only grow in East Asian countries. This Urushi is in very limited supply. The deciduous Urushi tree takes 15 years to reach maturity. The Urushi sap is mixed with other compounds to form the lacquer. When hand applied to the surface of the pen and kept in high humidity it slowly gets into a hard durable and lustrous finish, which is waterproof and resistant to most other materials. The special lacquered finish protects the pen in the best possible manner. The Urushi is applied in up to 12 separate coatings, all of which have to fully harden and dry before the next application. The total process can take up to two months to prepare.

All the nibs of the King of Pens are made of 21 carat gold, which gives them a very smooth feel on paper. The 21 carat gold, but also the polishing of the tip of the nib in iridium which protects the gold, make this large nib an exceptional piece in the world of gold nibs. In this size of large gold nibs for large pens, the fine size and sizes below do not exist: the length of the nib would make a FINE (or even extra-fine) nib too fragile.
In general, Japanese nib sizes are always narrower than European standards.

KOP The King of Pens
In 1911 Mr. Sakata and his brother founded the “Sakata-Manufactory” to produce solid gold nibs.
In 1917 the factory relocated to the next town Hamadacho and the Company changed the name to “Sailor Pen Sakata-Manufactory Co., Ltd.” The Company started manufacturing fountain pens here in volumes.
The Company reached a turning point on 27th May 1926 when Imperial Prince Hirohito (Prince Regent, later Emperor Showa) visited the factory to encourage the industry. This was a great honour for a small company with 300 employees established only 15 years previously.
Taking this opportunity, The SAILOR Pen Company aquired significant credibility and notoriety nationwide.
